History
Officially formed by an act of the Indiana Legislature in 1824, Hendricks County was created from the area of Putnam County and other, unorganized territory, and named after Indiana Governor William Hendricks. Many of the Quaker faith settled in one of the first town, Guilford Township, traveling from North Carolina and settling there, in the area around present day Plainfield.

Hendricks County’s borders are Boone County in the north, Montgomery and Putnam Counties to the west, Morgan County to the south and Marion County (the location of Indianapolis) to the east. During the early days, families traveled to Hendricks from Indianapolis, looking for good farmland and the opportunities the area offered. With the urbanization of the area though, the trend began to reverse by 1880, with people returning to the cities, looking for a better way of life than farming held.
