Avon Area Guide

Avon is a small, family-focused community. The area has experienced a large amount of growth since the early 1990's due to its business-friendly location and well respected educational system, which placed in the top 25% of all Indiana schools for its statewide testing scores and graduation rate. Avon is well suited for commuters who work in Indianapolis and the new growth has made way for a great deal of new housing options as well.

East Central part of Hendricks County, 10 miles west of Indianapolis and 7 miles east of Danville, the county seat.

Avon boasts a rich musical tradition that includes two national championships for Avon’s High School Marching ban and is also the home of the Hendricks Symphony and Choir. Avon is also proud of Natalie Walker, whose music has been featured on “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Ugly Betty”, who got her start as an AHS music student.

Whether you want the small town ambience Avon provides and still enjoy to the action of the big city or are ready to enjoy the parks and music, Avon has so much to offer, it could take a while to take it all in!

History
The Hampton Post Office, Avon’s first, was established 1833 and headed by Absalom Payne. In 1852, O.J. Huron accepted a commission and renamed the post office White Lick, but this lasted only five months until Mr. Huron retired.

John Smoot leased some ground in 1858 and built a small one room store, the first store and the beginning of Avon. It wasn’t long before Smoot moved to Democrat ground to avoid arguments with others in town with different affiliations. The ‘town’ moved west and eventually became Avon, named by the railroad.
The Civil War marked the end of the pioneer period in Avon and today, Avon has gone through changes, yet remained the same small town it was.
